For many years Matinicus Island has been my “edge” - that magical divide where the convenient ends and dreams begin.

Our island lies on the literal edge of America and by distance alone qualifies as a frontier. Like many edges, the island is captivating and gorgeous, and like many frontiers, it can challenge you in unexpected ways. When the winds howl or the fog never seems to lift, it is tempting to reject the unspoiled beauty and the remote quiet of the island and dream of a mainland you can't even see. Island life will challenge your physical, occupational and social skills and you won't learn much from living here if your plan for happiness ignores those demands. To live on my edge of Penobscot Bay you must be prepared to live with, learn from and contribute to the traditions, patterns and rhythms of island life. I plan to keep practicing until my art satisfies those ideals.
